Art in the Park
It is with heavy heart that we are announcing the cancellation of Art in the Park on September 13th, 2020 due to the current Covid-19 restrictions. However, we are planning a Virtual Art in the Park event to begin in August! We are excited about the possibilities that this will bring not only to our members but the artist community as a whole throughout Sonoma, Marin, and Napa Counties. An official announcement to artist communities will be sent out the third week of June once the PAA Board and AITP Committee work out the details. Please wait for this announcement to occur before you share this information with all of your friends, family and clientele.

Spring Show at the Library
Hedda has made contact with Joe Cochran at the library about picking up the PAA artwork. We hope to be picking up the art the week of June 1st. An email to all participants will follow as soon as we collect the artwork.

Another Piano Painting Opportunity! John Maher has given PAA another piano to paint and it will be on display throughout Petaluma. The theme of the piano will be Art in the Park. PAA Field Trips/Outings: Marilyn Dizikes and Hedda Gold have four field trips planned for the year. They decided to plan one field trip per quarter of the year. We’re hoping for an enthusiastic response.

1. Jan. – March: Our first trip will be close to home. We’ll be going to Marin MOCA in Novato. There is a survey of paintings and drawings by Elmer Bischoff (1937 – 1972). The date will be Wed., March 11. We will meet in the Kmart Shopping Center at 10:30 to car pool. Please let us know if you plan to attend. The cost will be $8 for seniors or $10 for all others. We’ll have lunch nearby.

2. April – June: Our second trip will be to the De Young to see the Frida Kahlo show. This show will be very popular so please get your tickets ahead of time (at least one month). The date will be Tues., May 12. If you are a member, please arrange for a free ticket for someone else attending. (Members are allowed 2 free tickets). The tickets are timed so make them for 10 or 10:30. We will meet at the Kmart Shopping Center at 9:30. Let us know if you plan to attend. We will have lunch there in the cafeteria. Please bring $5 for the drivers.

3. July – Sept: Our third trip will be back at the De Young for the Judy Chicago Retrospective. Once again it would probably be good to get your tickets ahead of time. The date will be Tues., July 14. We will meet at the Kmart Shopping Center at 9:30. We will have lunch in the cafeteria. Please bring $5 for the drivers.

4. Oct. – Dec: Our final trip for 2020 will be to SFMOMA. The date will be Tues., Oct. 6. Depending on the response, we thought we might take SMART and the ferry and then Uber to the Museum. Driving there is more difficult, plus parking is very expensive. We thought this might be a fun experience for everyone. Tell us what you think. We would meet at the train station (time to be determined).

Questions: Marilyn Dizikes dmdizikes@gmail.com or Hedda Gold hagold@juno.com (see emailed version of the newsletter for phone numbers).

“A WHISKEY PAINTING is a miniature watercolor (4”x 5” max. image) painted by a bona-fide member of the WHISKEY PAINTERS OF AMERICA (WPA). The WPA, formed in the late 1950s has a limited membership of 150. An artist must be sponsored by an existing member. " A genuine Whiskey Painting consists of painting a miniature piece of art no larger than 4 X 5" with watercolor by dipping your brush in some form of alcoholic spirits,.... then possibly sipping the alcohol, thereby enhancing the painting experience.

Whiskey paintings have been exhibited in many national shows across the nation. At this time, WPA has 2 annual shows...one in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio in April [It's 31st year], and one in Augusta, Georgia Sept.-Oct...[it's 9 Th year] . Other shows have been held in Commercial Galleries and Art Museums across the nation.. Paintings generally sell from a minimum of $ 75. to as high as $1500., with an average typically between $ 150. and $ 300.

The Whiskey Painters of America is the most unique and exclusive miniature painting society in the world with a set limit of 150 members [by charter]....To become a member, an applicant must have a current Bona-Fide member of the WPA as sponsor. July General Meeting: We had a stimulating conversation about revitalizing Art in the Park for 2020. All members who were present contributed to the list of possibilities. We wanted to get back to our mission statement of providing scholarships or awards to students engaged in the field of visual arts. Having the schools involved would be a great way to make this a family friendly community event. Some of the ideas suggested were: having a coloring contest and/or student art projects with cash awards, give participating schools and SRJC students their own booths, community service hours for high school students to work at interactive booths like rock painting, temporary tattoos, etc., some food vendors and a “non-alcoholic” drink mixologists, and a voter registration booth.

PAA extends a huge thank you to Art in the Park Chairs Maria Lewis and Connie Heizer for all the work they had already done in preparation for this year’s event, and for all of the time they have spent undoing what they had so competently done. PAA thanks them for their continued willingness to take on the leadership for our 2020 Art in the Park. Maria will email dates of upcoming planning meetings for members who are interested in joining the 2020 PAA Art in the Park Planning Committee.

Other Event Possibilities:

●  PAA might want to entertain the idea of having a Pop Up Show. It is an impromptu afternoon/evening event where we would show our art- on sidewalk easels or in shops. We could have a mixologist and make it a market like environment.

●  New member, Alva Alexiades ,shared she has done the training for Public Community Access. She has done 7 documentaries. They are shown all around the Bay Area. It was suggested we pursue the possibility of creating PAA Documentary.

●  PAA could create a Facebook Live Video-livestreaming
If any of these ideas sound like they are right up your alley to organize, please let the Board know and we’ll set up a time to meet and see what’s possible.

Art in the Park Cancellation:
Two weeks ago, it was brought to our attention that the City of Petaluma double booked Walnut Park on September 29, 2019 and will not be able to honor our reservation. At this late point in the year the PAA Board has decided it isn’t feasible to continue to plan Art in the Park for 2019, and that this year’s event should be cancelled. If you have already paid your booth fee for 2019 a refund check will be issued and sent to you the first week of July.

We are very sorry to do this and know that this will be a disappointment for many of you, as it was for the board. This was not an easy decision to make and one we’ll strive to never repeat.

We are making every effort to make the 2020 Art in the Park the best event possible for patrons and vendors alike, and have already begun our preparations - including bringing in more booths and activities. We encourage you to join us in making these decisions and are welcoming your input to make it a success. And look for our save the date announcement and event information for 2020, which we will send out in October 2019.

We encourage you to attend our July 13th quarterly meeting at 10:00 a.m. to join in the conversation.

Once again we apologize for having to cancel this years event. Yours truly,
PAA Board and Art in the Park Committee

Board Meetings are held the first Monday of every month.
Members are welcome to attend and observe all Board Meetings. Please contact Maria Lewis for meeting information

Planning Meeting Review: We had our planning meeting on January 19th.
The following are the outcome of the discussions that took place. Numbers 1 & 2  were voted on and confirmed by the members present:
  1. Dues would increase to $45 to cover PAA operating expenses for 2019.
  2. Quarterly Meetings would replace Monthly Meetings. Meetings will be held in January, April, July, and November. These Meetings will be on the 2nd Saturday of those months preferably in the morning. January meeting will be our annual planning meeting. The three other quarterly meetings will have a presenter. Continuing monthly meetings would exceed our annual dues intake.

PAA’s Purpose (as stated in our Bylaws):
PAA will provide activities to promote the appreciation of visual art in Petaluma.
PAA will provide scholarships or awards, if funds are available,  to students engaged in the field of visual arts.
PAA will provide a supportive fellowship that motivates and encourages its members to develop and expand their skills and appreciation in the field of visual arts.

With keeping our purpose in mind we decided at the Planning Meeting to create monthly PAA Community Activities to fulfill on the portion of our bylaws as stated above.

The PAA Board cannot do this alone. We are encouraging members to become more active by; participating in and to help with providing activities and a supportive fellowship to our artist community.

Community Events:
Monthly PAA Community Activities will take place every month. There is no limit to how many activities can be planned each month and they can be planned by any PAA member.
The more activities provided the more choices members have to participate in.
The member(s) who creates the event will be in charge of handling all the details of the event and will be the contact point for all inquiries and sign-ups.
These events will be posted on our website, PAA Newsletter (if submitted on time), Facebook, and email blasts will go out to members with information on how members can participate. We encourage members to bring a guest with them to all events to expose them to PAA and art.
These activities/events can be anything from:
a.) Visiting galleries, museums and attending PAA members shows.
b)  Outdoor painting/drawing events, art critique support groups
c) Social events to get to know each other and collaborate on
   PAA membership shows ideas.
d) It can also be an announcement about upcoming shows members can participate in.
e) Invitation to members about your own show and when the show reception will be so members can support you by attending.
f)Going on an Art Trails or Open Studios group tour and much, much more!!
.

Social Media:
We added a Social Media Chair, Connie Heizer, to work on reaching out through places like Facebook and Instagram etc…Also to use these sites to promote members shows and individuals who have shows.
Connie would like to invite us to LIKE the Facebook page and then SHARE it.  Connie will be adding you to the page and you need to "accept" the invitation for a new Facebook page.  https://www.facebook.com/thepetalumaartsassociation

She is requesting Member Profiles to post an artist’s work to showcase on the site as well as PAA website. She is planning to create a Membership Drive and will broaden our organization’s demographics by starting a PAA Instagram page. Please LIKE and SHARE that as well. Please send her your info at casaheizer@gmail.com.

Members will be emailed a final Copy of PAA Bylaws to review and a confirmation vote will take place at our April General Meeting.
